Safair Herc Tales

Photographer Marsel Roothman for SaFair

We’re collecting the stories about Safair’s Herc operations over the years.

As Safair’s history operating the L100-30C comes to an end, we are looking to collect all the stories of adventure, endurance and intrigue that have made the company’s history with this aircraft so rich.

As Safair’s history operating the L100-30C comes to and end, we are looking to collect all the stories of adventure, endurance and intrigue that have made the company’s history with this aircraft so rich.

By the end of October 2021, we hope to have collected a mass of stories, all told by the people who were out there, operating these magnificent machines.

The aim is to publish a coffee table style book, which will be available to all, that contains all these stories along with the amazing images that we can gather. It will not be a formal history, we already have something of that nature, but rather a “real history” where we share real stories, like the time a team was stranded on a remote Somalian airstrip, surrounded by rebels, with a flat tyre and no jack. Or perhaps the time we had to ferry a Herc from Ethiopia back to Johannesburg with High Speed Tape plugging the shrapnel holes in the fuselage thanks to local mortar attacks.

Stories we’ve collected here can be reviewed for inspiration, but we need as many contributions as we can get. We therefor kindly request that contributions be sent via email to wkruger@safair.co.za. Alternatively click the button below to upload a submission to now.

Fast Food in the Drought

Contribution by Alec Anderson The start of another day in Lockichogio in the north of Kenya begins at 06:00 local. The airplane, an L382 or civilian Hercules, sits squat and heavy on the apron, fuelled and loaded the night before. At six sharp the APU springs to life, the whining note singing out to all…

Special Memories from Previous Safair CEO

Contributed by Dave Andrew My first encounter with a Herc was back in the early 80s as a national serviceman returning from South West Africa following a camp in Ondangwa. Little did I know at that stage, that that aircraft type was going to play such a significant part in my career. I joined Safair…
